“to explore the limits and modalities of this sensory apparatus”- An interview with Jessica Ekomane

Jessica Ekomane is a French-born and Berlin-based electronic musician and sound artist. Her ever-changing and immersive sonic landscapes are grounded in questions such as the relationship between individual perception and collective dynamics or the investigation of listening expectations and their societal roots. Her first LP Multivocal was released in 2019 via Important Records. Since then, her work has been presented at Radio France, CTM festival, Berghain, Cafe OTO, Hamburger Bahnhof, Reina Sofia, Art Basel, KW, Villa Massimo etc. Her piece “Manifolds” was released in 2024 as a split LP with Laurel Halo on Portraits GRM / Shelter Press. This in-depth interview emphasizes how Ekomane navigates sensory perception, temporal structures, spatial audio formats, technological tools, and philosophical-cultural questions in her sound-based practice. She reflects critically on the mediums she uses, whether it is live performance, stereo recordings, or multichannel installations, and the responsibility of technology and algorithmic creation in contemporary electronic music.
